About Me

Michael F. Reed, MD, is chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, a professor of surgery at Penn State College of Medicine and the program director for the Thoracic Surgery Residency program. After graduating summa cum laude from Dartmouth College, he earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Reed then served a surgical residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital, followed by a thoracic surgical fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.

During his residency, he spent three years as a surgical oncology research fellow at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, studying cell cycle control and chemotherapeutic response. Upon finishing his training, Dr. Reed developed a busy clinical thoracic surgery practice with particular interest in minimally invasive surgery, airway diseases and endoscopic interventions. He also focused on educational methods for teaching novel surgical and endoscopic techniques. Additionally, he pursued research on the role of the retinoblastoma tumor suppressor on checkpoint control in lung cancer.

In 2010, Dr. Reed joined the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center where he has a busy clinical practice that includes robotic surgery, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and major open thoracic surgical operations, as well as bronchoscopic and endoscopic interventions. He conducts research involving outcomes from robotic surgery, advanced bronchoscopy and educational methods for teaching novel surgical and endoscopic techniques and has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, as well as numerous chapters and abstracts.
