Practice LocationsBiographical InformationUpon completing his Biology degree at Ursinus College in 1975, Dr. Thomas Loughran continued on to Hahnemann Medical School where he earned his medical degree, graduating in 1979. He then pursued both his internship and residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, followed by a successful fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the University of Washington. Throughout the 80’s and early 90’s, Dr. Loughran worked in the Clinical Research Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center under the leadership of Nobel Laureate, Dr. E.D. Thomas. He then returned back east and spent time as a professor of medicine and Associate Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the SUNY Health Science Center, and Chief of Hematology at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Syracuse, New York. He then went on to become the Program Leader of Hematologic Malignancies at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dr. Loughran is the first Director of the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, appointed in 2003. Dr. Loughran was instrumental in discovering a new hematologic malignancy which he termed large granular lymphocyte (LGL) leukemia. Dr. Loughran’s career path has been a testament to translational research – with his clinical observations leading to discoveries in the laboratory, and his laboratory research contributing to improved clinical treatments. Research Interests
In addition to his research interest in large granular lymphocyte (LGL) leukemia, Dr. Loughran's research interests include retrovirus infections and cellular immunity. Among his many areas of expertise are hematologic neoplasms and bone marrow transplantation. Dr. Loughran has published in over 190 publications in leading journals, including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Blood, Annals of Internal Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, and Journal of Clinical Oncology.
