About Me

Christoph Brehm, MD, is a cardiothoracic surgeon who is skilled in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a type of life support for those with a serious illness that affects the function of the heart and/or lungs. Dr. Brehm earned his medical degree from Philipps University Marburg, Marburg, Germany, and completed his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Ruhr University of Bochum, Bad Oeynhausen, Germany. He also served his internship in cardiothoracic surgery at Ruhr University of Bochum, as well as a surgery internship at University of Bonn in Bonn, Germany.  

Dr. Brehm joined Penn State Health in 2009 and is currently program director for the Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute Critical Care Unit at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and program director for the adult ECMO program. He has been recognized for patient satisfaction and participated in extensive ECMO research, including the study of extracorporeal life support and renal function. Dr. Brehm is an associate professor in the Department of Surgery at Penn State College of Medicine.
