Referring and Admitting a Patient

Penn State Hershey has a comprehensive process for external providers to request patient transfers, requests for consultations, or outpatient visits. The process begins with one phone call to our MD Network, which supports any and all external physician needs. Calls handled by the MD Network staff are of a variety of levels including emergent, urgent, or routine nature needs.

When you call the MD Network at 1-800-233-4082, you hear the following four prompts:

Press 1: For a heart alert or acute adult or pediatric stroke transfer
Press 2: For an adult ECMO transfer or for a cardiac, vascular, or thoracic surgical emergency
Press 3: For all hospital transfers to the Medical Center or Children's Hospital.
Press 4: For all other concerns

Callers selecting prompts 1, 2, or 3 are now directed from the MD Network to the Patient Logistics Department Transfer Center. Calls are answered by a registered nurse or a transfer center liaison, who facilitates hospitals transfers, collects the appropriate documentation, initiates bed placement, and arranges transportation through Penn State Hershey Life Lion if needed.

Patient Logistics, created in June 2012, is a comprehensive organizational model that focuses on the improvement of patient flow and capacity management through centralization of key resources and collaboratively across the hospital system. The goal of the team is to improve patient flow from pre-admission through the hospital stay and culminating with appropriate discharge care.

The MD Network continues to provide services for external providers and offices by connecting them to a Penn State Hershey provider for reasons other than a hospital transfer.  By pressing number 4, an MD Network associate pages the appropriate service line physician based upon the request.
