Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship
The Penn State College of Medicine Alumni Society Board of Directors established the Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship to help provide financial assistance to current medical and graduate students. The response to our appeal has been fantastic. There is now more than $280,000 that has been contributed to the Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship Fund!
As a result of the generosity of so many of our alumni, we were be able to award more scholarship dollars (over $80,000) than ever before in 2009. Sixty-one deserving College of Medicine students received alumni scholarships at Convocation this year. As a self-perpetuating fund, only earned interest from the endowment is used for the scholarship. The principal is preserved to generate future scholarships. Consequently, the larger the endowment, the more students we can help.
While our students are outstanding, they need financial assistance. The personal debt load upon graduation for medical students averages $175,000 and for graduate students, over $60,000. More than 90 percent of the students at Penn State College of Medicine receive scholarship and loan support.
