The fellowship in neuroanesthesiology is a one or two year course of training designed to prepare anesthesiologists for a career specializing in providing comprehensive anesthetic care of patients undergoing complicated neurosurgical or neuroradiological procedures. The core of the fellowship is intraoperative anesthetic care, but rotations in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, and Interventional Neuroradiolology provide enriching information and perspectives.
A strength of this program is intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring. This service is provided by the Department of Anesthesiology. Fellows are expected to achieve competence in both the technical and interpretive skills of neurophysiologic monitoring, and will have the option of sitting for board certification after adequate experience.
The scope of clinical practice ranges from neonates to geriatrics and from laminectomy to arteriovenous malformation resection. Fellows are expected to function in a supervisory role, with the emphasis on their education and not on providing a clinical service.
Fellows will take a leadership role in the academic life, coordinating the monthly multispecialty neuroscience journal club, the weekly intraoperative neuromonitoring service update, and the daily resident education. Completion of an academic project is required. This project could be collaboration on writing a book chapter, joining an ongoing animal or human subject research project, or giving a presentation at a national forum.
The goal of this fellowship is to train anesthesiologists who will not only provide excellent clinical care but also contribute to the scientific and clinical advancement of the specialty.
