- The current total number of residents in our program is 61 (PGY 1 through PGY 4)
- We will be recruiting 15 PGY1 positions each year.
- Residents are constantly interacting not only with attending anesthesiologists during the OR rotations, but also with medical students. At any given month, 2 to 6 medical students are rotating through our department, both at the 3rd year and 4th year level.
A Welcome from the Chiefs
Welcome to Hershey, the sweetest place on earth!
We are excited to introduce you to our exceptional residency program. There are several advantages to training as an anesthesiology resident at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Our tertiary care center in the heart of Central Pennsylvania serves a large catchment area with a diverse patient population. Life Lion, our aeromedical critical care transport and our status as a level 1 trauma center attract challenging and unique cases. Additionally, the new Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital allows for a large number of complex pediatric cases.
Penn State Hershey offers a unique, integrated, four-year residency program that results in early exposure to and mastery of a wide variety of anesthetic cases. Residents are provided with a balanced education starting from the first day of internship that ensures the development of well-rounded consultant anesthesiologists. Whether you are interested in pediatric, neuro, OB, cardiothoracic, chronic and acute pain, or critical care anesthesia, you will be given the opportunity to become proficient within each subspecialty. Weekly didactic lectures for each class, including weekly board review for CA-1s and CA-3s, are protected and highly valued time. Oral board practice exams with faculty are scheduled throughout the year for all residents within the program. Our graduates leave with a variety of opportunities that include fellowships, private practice, and clinical professorships in academic medicine. Our diverse faculty members are well recognized for their contributions to research and clinical anesthesia. They are the foundation of our program and provide our residents with the opportunity to learn many unique techniques for practicing anesthesia.
The residency at Penn State Hershey uniquely combines "big city" training with a high quality of life in a safe rural setting. Imagine a post-call day enjoying the rides at Hershey Park, a Broadway show at the Hershey Theater, concerts and hockey games at the Giant Stadium, nightlife in Harrisburg, or running, fishing, camping, and skiing. Hershey is also located within a short drive or train ride of Washington D.C., New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore making weekend excursions remarkably easy. No matter what your academic and personal interests include, living in Hershey and completing a residency at Penn State will provide an enjoyable and thorough training experience.
We thank you for your interest in our program and look forward to meeting you soon!
