Current Residents

  • The current total number of residents in our program is 66 (PGY 1 through PGY 4)
  • Beginning in 2013, we will be recruiting 13 PGY1 positions each year.
  • Residents are constantly interacting not only with attending anesthesiologists during the OR rotations, but also with medical students. At any given month, 2 to 6 medical students are rotating through our department, both at the 3rd year and 4th year level.

A Welcome from the Chiefs

Welcome to Hershey, the sweetest place on earth!

We are excited to introduce you to our exceptional residency program.  There are several advantages to training as an anesthesiology resident at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.  Our tertiary care center serves a large catchment area of Central Pennsylvania with aeromedical transport capabilities to our level 1 trauma center.  From the beginning of residency, we routinely manage difficult traumas and become competent in large, complex cases.  The addition of our state of the art Children's Hospital, opened Feb. 2013, has also provided increasing pediatric caseload and complexity.

In addition to trauma and pediatrics, our program is well-established with a reputation for providing a balanced education to ensure the development of well-rounded, consultant anesthesiologists.  Whether you are interested in pediatric anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, OB, Cardiothoracic, chronic and acute pain, or critical care, you will become proficient in all of the subspecialties.  Our graduates leave with a variety of opportunities to pursue fellowships within and outside the program, private practice across the nation, and clinical professorship tracts in academic medicine within the institution.  Weekly didactic lectures for each class, including weekly board review for CA-3s, are protected and highly valued time.  Oral board practice exams with faculty are scheduled throughout the year.  Our diverse faculty from all over the world are well recognized for their contributions to anesthesia.  They are the foundation of our program and provide our residents with the opportunity to learn many unique techniques, not just a program recipe, for practicing anesthesia.

Apart from being a strong academic program, Residency in Hershey also provides a unique quality of life by providing "big city" training and recreation within the comfort and safety of a rural setting.  Imagine a post-call day at Hershey Park, only 10 min. from the medical center.  Enjoy Broadway shows at the Hershey Theater, concerts at Hershey Park stadium, nightlife in Harrisburg, or fishing, camping, and skiing right around the corner.  Hershey is also uniquely placed within a short driving distance of Washington D.C., New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore making weekend excursions possible.  No matter what your interests may be, living in Hershey is enjoyable, with short driving distances, minimal traffic, and beautiful scenery.

We thank you for your interest in our program and look forward to meeting you soon!
