The physicians of the Adult Reconstructive Service provide comprehensive management of a broad range of upper and lower extremity reconstructive problems in a highly specialized and caring environment. These physicians are board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and have successfully completed orthopaedic subspecialty fellowships. Additionally, the service includes physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatry), a rehabilitation specialist, a clinical nurse specialist and a dedicated group of physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and social workers with special expertise in the care, management, and rehabilitation of joint replacement patients.
More than 300 total joint arthroplasty procedures and 100 new tumor procedures are performed each year, and more than 5500 patients are seen yearly. With a broad geographic referral base, nearly 50 percent of the joint replacement procedures performed are complex revisions for failed prior operation, with the balance comprising both common and complex first-time hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow replacements as well as various reconstructive procedures.
All joint replacement procedures are performed under strict infection-control conditions and closed surgical air exhaust systems. Patients are informed of what to expect after surgery through a comprehensive pre-operative program, and are referred to Penn State Rehabilitation Center at the Hershey Medical Center for physical therapy following reconstructive orthopaedic procedures. An integrated multidisciplinary approach brings together physical and occupational therapy, patient education, prosthetics and orthotics, and functional training for activities of daily living to maximize patient recovery.
The Adult Reconstructive Service of Penn State Hershey is organized to provide a strong, balanced approach to the challenges of both primary and complex revision joint arthroplasty, and surgical treatment of diseases of the skeleton and extremities.
