Residency Education
As a part or our mission to improve the care of children, the training of new pediatricians is a major goal of our faculty. We take pride in our role as a university teaching hospital and give teaching a high priority. We believe that medicine is both a science and an art, and we recognize that a rational, scientific approach to patient treatment and care must be coupled with respect, empathy, and a concern for both patient and family.
Penn State Children's Hospital
Penn State Children's Hospital is a 129 bed facility dedicated to the care of children in the central Pennsylvania region. We are the region's only level 1 Pediatric Trauma center and serve as the only Academic Pediatric facility in central Pennsylvania. We offer the full range of Pediatric Medical and Surgical Subspecialties
Harrisburg Hospital
Milton Hershey School
The Milton Hershey School is a unique exposure for Penn State Residents. It is an all expense paid boarding school for young men and women from Kindergarten through High School. The health clinic is staffed by Penn State Pediatricians and General Pediatrics Residents and allows them to provide a medical home for the students during and between the school year.

In addition to our inpatient facilities, the Department of Pediatrics provides primary care services to children living in the greater Hershey community as well as outpatient consultative services for referring practitioners throughout central Pennsylvania.
In Hershey, we have two large facilities to provide pediatric outpatient care. The General Pediatric Outpatient Care site is located in a separate facility at the east end of the medical center campus. This building contains the general pediatric outpatient suites, continuity and acute care clinics as well as laboratory and x-ray suites. Subspecialty pediatric clinics are located at the University Physician’s Center. This three-story building completed in 1993 is connected to the hospital complex via a covered bridge.
In Harrisburg, residents on the newborn/outpatient rotation at Pinnacle Health Services Hospital also attend the outpatient clinics there for one month during their first year of training one month of inpatient as well.
At both sites, residents are expected to be the first to evaluate the patients and develop their treatment plans, which are then presented to the full-time pediatric, attending staff. In both areas, noon conferences supplement the clinical material seen (that’s not quite true over at Pinnacle).
