The pediatric allergy and immunology service provides consultations to physicians and care to infants, children, and adolescents with asthma, allergic conditions, or immunologic disorders. In addition to physicians, the team includes nurse specialists, nutritionists, social workers, and respiratory therapists. Its philosophy involves a multidisciplinary approach to care, with intensive education and training at the time of diagnosis and re-evaluation.
Diagnostic studies include skin testing and pulmonary function testing. Desensitization for allergies is available. Food Allergy Support Group Food allergy affects approximately 2-5% of the pediatric population. The most common food allergies in young children include milk, egg, wheat, soy, and peanut. In older children and teenagers, the most common food allergies include peanut, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. These reactions can be life threatening, and the possibility of an accidental ingestion can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for both children and parents. At the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, we have a support group for parents and caregivers of children with anaphylactic food allergy. We meet on a monthly basis, and discuss a variety of topics including navigating the school system, going on vacation, planning for the holidays, and even dealing with the psychological issues that may accompany food allergies. Sometimes guest speakers are present. All are welcome, even if the child is not a patient at the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital Allergy and Immunology clinic.
