Strategic Initiatives
2011-2016
Penn State Dermatology's missions are Patient Care, Education, Research and Community Service. These missions support our goal to help people have healthy skin
Patient Care Mission – Give the highest level of care to our patients by:
- Increasing access and quality
- Taking advantage of practice opportunities in Central Pennsylvania
- Adding a second pediatric dermatologist
- Increasing clinic space by moving to a new building
- Starting Mohs skin cancer surgery at State College
- Recruit a general dermatologist
Education Mission – Recruit, train, and retain the best faculty, residents, medical and graduate students by:
- Train future physician researchers through a new extended training program
- Investigate master level training opportunities in addition to concentrated dermatology training
- Increase funding for the Hassel, Lookingbill, Marks, and Schragger educational endowments in order to fund outside lecturers and research projects in our department
- Investigate educational opportunities focused on the management of skin disease for primary care providers
Research Mission – Be a nationally recognized leader in research by:
- Growing our clinical research
- Recruiting a physician researcher to advance our knowledge of skin disease and treatment
- Increasing our Dermatology Research Endowment Funds in order to support our research mission
- Expanding collaborative research with investigators on whole campus at Penn State - University Park
- Developing research initiatives on quality of healthcare delivery in dermatology
Community Service Mission – Partner with our neighbors to improve skin health by:
- Providing free skin cancer screenings in conjunction with our American Academy of Dermatology, PAD and with our community partners
- Promoting sun protection to prevent skin cancer by building shade structures and planting shade trees in the Hershey and State College communities
- Working with our Community Advisory Board on sun protection projects
- Providing dermatology services at the Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg, PA, and at Camp Horizon in Millville, PA
