First Place Junior Faculty Award received by Dr. Alaa S. Awad

Dr. Alaa S. Awad, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Cellular & Molecular Physiology was the recipient of a First Place Junior Faculty Award at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine's Cardiovascular Young Investigators' Forum, held in Chicago, IL in September 2009. This is a yearly competition in which 20 junior faculty are selected from applicants throughout the United States to present their research. His talk was entitled, “Blockade of Kidney Macrophage Infiltration Ameliorates Diabetic Nephropathy”.

Dr. Awad's research provided seminal findings for the direct role of CCR2 chemokine receptor for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy.
These findings may help in developing new therapeutic strategies to prevent or slow down the progression of renal damage associated with diabetes. This work was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, K99/R00 Award.
