Goals of Problem-Based Learning

  • Enhance the student's motivation to learn on her/his own.
  • Develop each student's ability to recognize what she/he needs to learn.
  • Develop each student's ability to locate information and choose the best sources.
  • Assist each student in gaining a useful basic and clinical science knowledge base.
  • Provide a real-life context around which each student can organize her/his new knowledge.
  • Activate and reinforce each student's prior knowledge.
  • Provide a setting for each student in which new knowledge may be elaborated upon and basic science knowledge can be immediately applied to clinical problems.
  • Develop each student's clinical reasoning skills.
  • Assist each student with the development of skills necessary in working cooperatively and effectively with others.
  • Assist each student with the improvement of oral presentation skills.
