Program Director's Welcome

Daniel Schlegel, M.D. Program Director, Residency in Family and Community Medicine

Welcome to the Penn State Hershey Family Medicine Residency Program!

As the oldest of its kind in the country, Penn State's Department of Family and Community Medicine has adapted and thrived in the continuously changing environment of health care in the United States, succeeding in its mission to provide outstanding clinical education and excellent patient care.

Our Program is embedded within and supported by this large and established Department of Family and Community Medicine and benefits from access to the educational resources at Penn State and the accomplished faculty educators who work within our Department.

Following several years of expansion, our Program is streamlining itself from 12 residents per year to 8 residents per year and becoming centralized at the Hershey Medical Center.  This overall centralization allows us to provide a stable and cohesive educational environment in which residents can receive more individualized attention.  While we continue to have collaborative relationships with local community hospitals to augment residents' exposure to different styles of practice this setup allows us to take fuller advantage of the impressive educational resources at Penn State's Hershey Medical Center.

Our faculty is committed to excellence and continuous improvement in resident education and patient care.  Our Program seeks to ensure that all residents achieve their greatest potential by providing a supportive and challenging learning environment where residents motivated to master the discipline of Family Medicine find the resources and role models to help them grow into exceedingly competent and compassionate Family Physicians.

I am proud of our Residency and to invite you to discover the challenging, vital Program we offer, designed to form you into an outstanding Family Physician.
