The General Surgery Residency is structured to provide residents with graduated responsibilities in the primary components of General Surgery over the five years of training. Each year is constructed to build on the experiences of the proceeding level. In the third through fifth years, service leadership are stressed.

Rotation Locations 

  • The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is a 491 bed institution situated in south central Pennsylvania just east of Harrisburg. In addition to the hospital complex, it contains the College of Medicine and biomedical research facilities for the Pennsylvania State University which is located just over 90 miles away in State College, PA. Within the hospital there are 26 operating rooms, 8 cardiovascular and interventional radiology labs, 4 intensive care units (Surgical, Neuroscience, Heart-Vascular, and Medical), and a 117 bed children’s hospital with pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. A stand-alone children’s hospital is currently under construction and anticipated to open in 2013. It is the only institution in the state that is both a Level I Adult and Level I Pediatric Trauma center and supports both ground and helicopter transport programs. Outpatient facilities are attached to the main complex by a walkway and house all of the surgical clinics. A new Cancer Center building was opened in July 2009. The hospital building is connected to the College of Medicine where the majority of faculty offices, research labs, and administrative offices for the Department of Surgery are located. The East Campus is located about one quarter of a mile away where the Breast Center and a free standing outpatient surgicenter with 5 operating rooms are located. The patient population served covers a catchment area of over 4.5 million people of widely varying economic and cultural backgrounds. Referrals come from all over the mid-portion of the state and from New York State to the north and western Maryland and West Virginia to the south. The hospital provides the full spectrum of medical care including basic primary and family care through its extensive Family Practice and Ambulatory Practice network to complex quaternary referral care in all specialties. For instance, it is one of the few institutions in the country performing adult, pediatric, and neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). In-patient surgical services provide for all of the defined categories of General Surgery. In addition, services exist for Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Pathology, Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Overall, the institution experiences 820,542 outpatient visits, 52,173 emergency room visits, 23,230 operative procedures, 26,739 in-patient admissions per year (fiscal year 2009). Department of Surgery performed 11,976 surgical procedures, 5,571 discharges, and 82,364 outpatient visits (fiscal year 2009).
  • Pinnacle Health System (Harrisburg Hospital) is a 400 bed urban community hospital that is in the city of Harrisburg. It provides advanced medical and surgical care to its surrounding area. 
  • The Lebanon Veterans Administration Hospital is located 17 miles east of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center and provides a wide range of general medical and surgical care to the veterans of Central Pennsylvania. It consists of a 49 bed acute medical-surgical unit with a 6 bed intensive care unit. There are 4 operating rooms staffed by 4 general surgeons who perform routine general surgical procedures and endoscopies.
