Global Health Scholars Program

Global Health - GHSP Application

The Global Health Scholars Program (GHSP) is a application-based process open to first year medical students attending Penn State's College of Medicine.

Due Date:  October 1st

The GHSP Planning Team will select up to 4 highly-qualified medical student candidates for each site to participate in the GHSP.  Students will be notified of their acceptance by November 1st.  Top candidates may be asked to provide 2-references.

Selection will take into consideration well-written, organized, original essays that convey enthusiasm; prior international work experience; prior domestic community service work; the importance of global health to career goals; foreign language skills; and personal strengths, among others.

Application Process:

1.  The application is available at this link: Global Health Scholars Application

2.  Applicants complete and submit the application electronically using the Submit button at the end of the document.   Applicants are highly encouraged to talk with GHSP faculty and current scholars.  Contact Dr. Fredrick (nfredrick@psu.edu) to help arrange this if desired.

3.  Each applicant will be interviewed by at least one Global Health Scholar

4.  The faculty typically meet to review the applications at the end of October.  Each applicant will receive notification after that meeting regarding acceptance.  These letters are sent by email in the early part of November.

Scholars will need to provide their own funding to cover trip expenses.  The anticipated costs are $2500 for the first year trip.
