Hamilton Memorial Lecture/Golf Tournament

Rob Hamilton died suddenly on October 7, 2005. He was a well known attorney, a loving son, brother, husband, friend and most importantly a devoted father of a one-year old daughter and a three year old son. He was truly a wonderful person and is greatly missed by all of his family, friends and colleagues. Rob died of Cardiac Sarcoidosis and like many people with this disease, sudden death occurred in the absence of obvious symptoms or a previous cardiac event.

Cardiac Sarcoidosis is a multi-system disease that involves inflammation that produces tiny lumps of cells in various organs in the body. Half of the Sarcoidosis patient population never experience symptoms, with the abnormality only appearing in chest x-rays. Studies show that 60 to 70% of Sarcoidosis victims are between 20 and 40 years old. Sarcoidosis was once thought to be an uncommon condition. It is now known to affect tens of thousands of people throughout the United States.

In his memory, The Rob Hamilton Memorial Golf Tournament was created by his family and friends to raise money to support the Heart & Vascular Institute at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The mission is to help ensure that patients in South Central Pennsylvania have access to the latest advances in cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment and that awareness is raised and research is focused in the area of Cardiac Sarcoidosis.  A related lecture and reception is held on the eve of the annual golf tournament.  Read abouth this year's Hamilton Memorial Lecture.

Please save the date for the 4th Annual Rob Hamilton Memorial Golf Tournament which will be held on September 18th, 2009 at the Hershey Country Club.

The 3rd Annual Rob Hamilton Memorial Golf Tournament raised $33,000 in 2008 for the Penn State Hershey Heart & Vascular Institute. Thank you for your generous support which has been instrumental in making this event become so successful and established in it’s mission to help the Heart & Vascular Institute develop and deliver the latest advances in cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Over the last three years The Rob Hamilton Memorial Golf Tournament has raised more than $100,000 for research, education and patient care initiatives. Each year important topics in cardiovascular medicine are presented and discussed at the annual Rob Hamilton Memorial Lecture which serves to increase essential continuing medical education. In addition the golf tournament event supports some other very worthy programs and projects within the Institute which are critical in helping its clinicians and researchers develop and offer the most sophisticated and comprehensive care for devastating heart related diseases like Cardiac Sarcoidosis.

Currently, there are several NIH-funded studies recruiting volunteers for studies on sarcoidosis.
