Electrocardiographic Services

Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute provides a full range of non-invasive diagnostic cardiac procedures for both adult and pediatric patients. The department utilizes five laboratories in addition to providing services to patients in the outpatient clinic sites in the I.O. Silver Cardiovascular Specialties Clinic, at the Nyes Road clinic site and at the bedside.

Cardiology Services performs over 32,000 procedures annually. Services include Nuclear Stress Testing and Stress Echocardiography with and without pharmacologic agents, Stress Testing, Metabolic Stress Testing, Holter application and Holter Scanning, EKG and Signal Averaged EKG. The Cardiology Services Department also includes Pacemaker Clinic services that include transtelephonic monitoring of pacemakers and arrhythmia event monitors as well as implantable pacemaker and defibrillator device programming and interrogation.

In an effort to provide the highest quality care possible, all cardiology services staff are tested for proficiency to demonstrate mastery of their skills after completing each phase of their orientation and training in the department. The majority of the staff is made up of board certified cardiology technicians, and those members who have not completed board certification are strongly encouraged to do so as soon as possible. All technicians are Basic Life Support certified in CPR.

Inpatient EKG and Holter services are routinely available Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.  All other inpatient and outpatient services are available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Cardiology Services also has weekend and holiday hours between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to cover inpatient EKG and Holter procedures.
