Heart and Vascular Institute - Heart Alert
Reducing Treatment Time
Unique to Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute is the Heart Alert program, which serves to optimize treatment options for patients presenting with signs and symptoms suggestive of a heart attack. Collaborating with regional paramedics and faculty and staff in the Emergency Department at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, the Heart Alert program triggers a timely response for all patients from the moment they are identified as having symptoms suggestive of a heart attack. Since the implementation of the Heart Alert program, the median door-to-balloon time for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction has decreased by 52 percent to sixty-nine minutes. Current American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association guidelines recommendation for door-to-balloon time being less than ninety minutes.
