Medical Student Humanitarian Award
The Association of Faculty and Friends and The Doctors Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine will present The Medical Student Humanitarian Award to a student from the class of 2004 in recognition of outstanding humanitarian service. To be eligible, the student will have completed the majority of his/her third-year clerkships by June 30, 2003. The tribute and accompanying $1000 award will be presented at Fall Convocation. The person we seek to honor is that distinguished medical student who has most exceeded expectation in supporting others by simple but consistent acts of care and concern. We envision a student who not only has demonstrated a solid academic record, but also valuable community service in expressing a spirit of unselfish concern for the welfare and comfort of others.
Mary Louise Witmer Jones Resident Humanitarian Award in Memory of Jane Witmer Kienle, M.D.
On her death in 1997, Mary Louise Witmer Jones of Medford, New Jersey, established an endowment to make possible an annual award in memory of her sister, Jane Witmer Kienle, M.D. The purpose of this award is to recognize a Milton S. Hershey Medical Center resident physician who demonstrates the highest standards of compassion and concern for his/her patients. This tribute and its accompanying $1000 award will be presented at Fall Convocation. To be eligible the physician must have completed one year of residency training at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and must be continuing residency at this institution for at least one additional year following the award. The resident physician we seek to honor is that individual who has demonstrated qualities such as: consistent acts of compassionate concern for fellow healthcare workers, and community; empathic awareness of the patient's experience of illness and the desire to facilitate the healing process; the ability to serve as an effective role model in the delivery of humane medical care.
Nurse's Humanitarian Award in Honor of Lawrence F. Kienle, M.D.
To be eligible for this award, a nurse must meet the criteria that makes tangible the vision of Dr. Lawrence Kienle and his wife, Jane Witmer Kienle, M.D. The award will honor Lawrence F. Kienle, M.D. for the generous support and guidance that he has continuously provided to the Center for Humanistic Medicine since 1985. Dr. Kienle is an active benefactor, and was co-benefactor with his wife, Jane, until her demise in 1991. Together they established The Doctors Kienle Chair for Humane Medicine–the only known such academic chair. The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and the Penn State College of Medicine have benefited greatly from the projects made possible by the generosity of the Doctors Kienle. The person we seek to honor at Fall Convocation with an award of $1000 is that distinguished nurse who has shown exceptional humanism by simple but consistent acts of care and concern. We envision a nurse who has demonstrated acts of caring as well as valuable community service in expression of a spirit of unselfish concern for the welfare and comfort of others. Please use the following criteria in considering your nominee for this award: demonstrates consistent acts of compassionate caring and concern for his/her patients, fellow healthcare workers, and community; demonstrates empathetic awareness of the patient's experience of illness and the desire to facilitate the healing process; serves as an effective role model in the delivery of humane nursing care; shows respect for others; demonstrates cultural sensitivity with patients and family members of diverse ethnic or religious backgrounds; displays effective communication and listening skills; understands a patient's need for interpretation of complex medical and nursing diagnoses and treatment and makes an effort to assure patient comprehension–shows respect for the patient's dignity; pays attention and is sensitive to the patient's psychological well-being; effectively identifies emotional concerns of patients and family members; engenders trust and confidence; adheres to professional ethical standards; displays personal commitment to objective self-evaluation of his/her own skills.
