Acute Care Medicine

The challenge of medical nursing is best experienced on this forty-four bed unit.  Our nurses care for patients with complex, multi-system health problems through the utilization of technology, such as Golvo for total lifting and Sabina for assisted lifting.  Nurses develop a wide breadth of knowledge combined with focused expertise unique to each subspecialty, including patients with chronic renal disease, adult cystic fibrosis, and other complex medical conditions. 

Our vision is to provide exceptional patient-focused care by a team of highly skilled professional providers.  We focus on communication, education and support between staff, patients and their families.  

Our nurses practice under a collaborative, multi-disciplinary model while caring for a wide variety of patients in the following subspecialties:

  • Gastroenterology 
  • Pulmonary 
  • Infectious disease     
  • General Medicine 
  • Palliative care

44 telemetry capable beds.

Staffing decisions are based on patient acuity. Typically it will be 1: 5.

Self-scheduling is available with a variety of shifts. Nurses work with the scheduling committee and Nurse Manager to develop schedules that meet personal and professional needs. Efforts are made to achieve the objective of every third weekend by three or more years of bargaining unit seniority.

Specific education is provided in cardiac rhythm interpretation. ACLS is offered within one year of hire. Staff development is ongoing through educational programs designed to meet specific unit needs. Classes are available to prepare individuals for certification in medical/surgical nursing. Certification is encouraged and financially rewarded.
