Program Overview
Foot and Ankle Fellowship Program

Paul J. Juliano, M.D., is a professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the Penn State Hershey and directs this fellowship.  He has been on staff at Hershey Medical Center since July, 1995.  His elective practice is exclusively dedicated to foot and ankle problems.  Dr. Juliano, as fellowship director, establishes appropriate curriculum for the foot and ankle fellow according to the guidelines of the ACGME.  Staff on the “foot and ankle” team includes; Lucille “Cici” Andersen M.D., Nell V. Blake, D.P.M. and Jorge Bustillo, M.D.  Specific responsibilities of the foot and ankle fellow are outlined below:

 

Clinical
  • See patients with Dr. Juliano
  • Work-up new patients: obtaining history and physical examination data, ordering, appropriate x-rays and presenting the patient to the attending staff physician
  • Perform procedures as directed:  removal of pins, administration of injections, routine foot care
  • Complete preoperative history and physical examinations and ensuring appropriate preoperative x-rays as available

 

Hospital
  • Share daily rounds with staff on all in-patients
  • Check preoperative lab work the day of surgery
  • Make postoperative check on all patients before discharge
  • See consults on in-patients and evaluate patients
  • Present patient to attending staff physician
  • Perform preoperative plan, prior to all elective cases
  • Will take general orthopaedic trauma call three times per month**

 

Surgery
  • Serve as assistant to primary surgeon as directed
  • Write postoperative orders and brief operative notes
  • Dictate all operative notes as directed
  • Perform all anesthetic blocks as directed
  • Ensure appropriate x-rays are on OR view board

 

Teaching
  • Monday afternoon pre-op conference.  Attendance is Mandatory
  • Journal Club the first Tuesday of each month.  Attendance is Mandatory
  • Grand Rounds every Thursday.  Attendance is Mandatory.  Fellow will be ranked as a clinical instructor in orthopaedic surgery and therefore will be required to give one Grand Rounds presentation at Hershey Medical Center.
  • M & M conference every second Monday at 6:30 a.m.  Attendance is Mandatory

 

Vacation and CME
  • 2 weeks of vacation and 1 week of CME are allowed.

 

Requirements

Physicians accepted for this fellowship position must obtain Pennsylvania medical licenses and DEA certificates. The candidates should be board eligible with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.  They are also required to obtain hospital privileges at the following institutions affiliated with the parent program:

 

  • Penn State Hershey
  • Hershey Outpatient Surgical Center
  • Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Lebanon

 

Beginning in 2008 the fellowship participates in the National Resident Matching Program.  Deadline for receipt of completed applications is December 1.

* Additional weeks dedicated to research may be allocated as needed. 

** Trauma call is encouraged.  Most practice positions after fellowship require some participation in general orthopedics and/or trauma call.
