Penn State Hershey
Graduate Education

Opportunities for basic science and clinical research are abundant within the Division of Musculoskeletal Sciences (DOMS) of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.

Graduate Student Education:  Each DOMS faculty member has cross appointments to basic science departments and degree granting programs.  All welcome graduate student rotations and training.

Postdoctoral Training:  The DOMS currently supports several postdoctoral scholars.  Their projects range from biomedical engineering to molecular cell biology.

Medical Student:  We fully support the Medical Student Research Program by offering training under our faculty and within our laboratory space.

Orthopaedic Resident Education:  Completion of a rotation through the DOMS provides residents with an unparalleled exposure to basic musculoskeletal science. The experience prepares future orthopaedic surgeons not only for careers in academic medicine but also for more successful and intellectually rewarding careers in private practice. For a more intensive research experience, a six-year residency option is available to highly qualified candidates in which one year is dedicated solely to laboratory research.

“Post-Baccalaureate Credit Certificate Program in Academic Medicine” (approved from 2004-2009)

Certificate Objectives:  To formally train orthopaedic residents interested in pursuing an academic appointment upon residency completion.  Residents will be given formal training in grant and manuscript writing, basic science (cellular/molecular) techniques, clinical research methods and leadership development.  For more information, follow this link.

The DOMS resources are available to all faculty and residents within the department.  Additionally, DOMS faculty are available to assist the preparation of grant applications for extramural funding.  Training is also available in data analysis, manuscript preparation, and development of oral presentation skills.
