Thank you for your interest in Penn State Hershey Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program.
Our program was recently reviewed by the Residency Review Commission (RRC), and was approved for another 5 years. In addition, our program was approved to increase our resident complement from 15 to 20 (4 PGY I residency positions each year).
In addition to our standard five year residency program, we offer a six year residency program aimed at providing training for an academic career.
Individuals interested in applying to our programs must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS). Application to our programs requires that you submit the following documentation via ERAS:
- USMLE scores
- Three (3) letters of recommendation. (We recommend that at least one of which should be from an orthopaedic physician who can provide an assessment of your potential as a future orthopaedic surgeon)
- Personal statement
- Medical school transcript
- Dean's letter
- Curriculum vitae
If you are interested in applying to our programs, please do so through ERAS at www.aamc.org/eras. Our programs are highly competitive, receiving over 350 applications per year, and we encourage you to begin the process early! Our mailbox opens on or about August 15th each year, and closes on or about October 15th each year. We begin downloading applications on October 1st.
Once our review and selection process is complete (on or about November 1st), we will extend invitations for interviews via ERAS e-mail. We will conduct two separate interview days – Monday, December 11, 2006 and Saturday, January 8, 2006, and both sessions will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Candidates will have 4 separate interviews - 3 clinical faculty members, 1 basic scientist, and 1 resident. We also offer a tour the facility, and you may sit and talk with other faculty members and residents throughout the course of the interview day.
The NRMP requires all interviewees to receive a copy of the resident contract. This Resident Agreement is subject to the terms of other contracts and legal documents.
