Education:
Clinical Interests:Dr. Charles Specht participates in the Surgical Neuropathology Service, with evaluation of biopsy specimens from the central nervous system, peripheral nerve, and skeletal muscle, the Surgical Ophthalmic Pathology Service with evaluation of specimens from the eye and orbit, and the Autopsy Neuropathology Service. Special methods such as enzyme histochemistry, immunocytochemistry, and electron microscopy are applied as needed. The majority of these cases are reviewed with the pathology residents during the course of their routine surgical pathology rotation.
Research Interests:Dr. Specht’s research interest in neuropathology is primarily directed toward study of the visual system. He has also worked in collaborative research with analytical methods such as tissue microspectroscopy and immunopathological evaluation of inflammatory tissue reactions. Dr. Specht encourages pathology residents to become involved in these research studies, with presentation of papers at national scientific meetings and development of articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Academic Interests:Dr. Specht participates in all weekly neuropathology conferences for residents in the Pathology Department, as well as in pathology-associated conferences co-sponsored by Neuropathology, Neurology, Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology. These conferences are supplemented by didactic neuropathology sessions.
