Med/Peds residents spend the majority of their time at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Our residents attend continuity clinics at our Hope Drive ambulatory center on campus or at Front Street in inner city Harrisburg. To provide a broader experience in emergency medicine and community hospital settings, the residents have duties also at:
- Lebanon Valley Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Lebanon, PA.
- Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, PA
- Pinnacle Health System Hospitals, Harrisburg, PA.
Residents are encouraged to seek out and participate in away electives nationally and internationally in areas of their particular interest.
Joint electives in a medicine and pediatrics subspecialty are also possible. Rotations in rheumatology, endocrinology, and dermatology are common.

Central Pennsylvania is a very beautiful and surprisingly diverse area. The striking images of the Amish and Mennonite families working their lush, fertile farms is often the first to come to one's attention when visiting (especially if one has seen the film Witness). However, the historic cities of Lancaster and Harrisburg with their stunning 19th and early 20th century architecture may surprise one. (Wynonna Ryder's movie, Girl Interrupted, was filmed in both cities, but supposedly set in Boston!) Furthermore, the population changes have lead to a diverse urban population of Caucasian, African-American, Latino, and Asian peoples.
Culturally there is a lot to offer. There is the Hershey Theater which presents touring Broadway shows and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra which presents world class performances. For the sports fan we have the Harrisburg Senators (minor league baseball team for the Washington Nationals) and the Hershey Bears (minor league hockey team for the Washington Capitals). The Giant Center and Hershey Park Stadium hold many concerts and other forms of entertainment throughout the year. There are hundreds of miles of rail trails in the area for the cyclist and many hiking trails. Outdoor activities are abundant in and around the surrounding area. For the shopper, there are several outlet malls in Central Pennsylvania: Hershey and Lancaster Tanger Outlets and Rockvale Square in Lancaster. And of course, there is Hershey Park and Hershey's Chocolate World. If you want a fun daytrip, we are just an hour and a half from Philadelphia and Baltimore, two hours to Washington, D.C. and just three and a half hours to New York City.
