Cleft Lip and Palate

Approximately one in 800 infants will have the misfortune of being born with a cleft lip and/or palate.  Fortunately, with modern techniques and resources, our surgeons are skilled to satisfactorily reconstruct the majority of these children so they can lead a normal life with minimal deformity.

We work collaboratively with the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, where children are usually seen as outpatients and receive long-term follow-up. This is a multidisciplinary clinic, offering patients most all services necessary for a child with a cleft under one roof. Orthodontists, dental surgeons, speech therapists/pathologists and plastic surgeons all consult together at the same visit, providing coordinated care. When surgery is required, it takes place at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
