As part of the emergency psychiatry experience, residents rotate through Hershey Medical Center Emergency Room. This experience is combined with the consultation liaison rotation. Residents are involved with all aspects of evaluating, diagnosing, and recommending disposition on psychiatric patients seen in the Emergency Room. They are supervised by an attending Psychiatrist and work in hand in hand with the social work department to find appropriate final disposition.
This is a structured rotation designed to develop the residents' skills in evaluation, diagnosis, management, and disposition for a broad variety of psychiatric emergencies. It deepens the residents' knowledge and understanding of psychiatric crises, including their consequences on a patient's life. Different treatment modalities are utilized.
