Geriatric Psychiatry

This rotation includes inpatient geriatric services and outpatient services at the Veterans’ Administration facility in nearby Lebanon.

The geriatric inpatient unit serves patients with the full range of psychiatric disorders seen in the elderly, including Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, mood disorders (particularly depression), anxiety disorders, and psychotic disorders. If indicated, ECT can be arranged.

Residents develop skills in the assessment of psychological, social or medical factors that may contribute to maladaptive behavior in the elderly.  Neuropsychological testing, laboratory tests, and radiologic studies supplement the psychiatric evaluations.  When appropriate, specialists in Medical Gerontology, Neurology, or other medical disciplines are consulted.
