Ultrasound

The Diagnostic Ultrasound Section offers a wide range of diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures:

  • General ultrasound studies available include (but are not limited to) upper abdominal, gynecologic, renal, and aortic sonograms. We also have a large number of thyroid, parathyroid, and extrathyroidal neck sonographic studies, and perform other superficial structure sonograms, such scrotal and abdominal wall examinations.
We do multiple thyroid and other neck biopsies each week, currently with at least two dedicated days where such interventional studies are performed. Other ultrasound-guided interventional procedures are available, such as paracentesis, thoracentesis, biceps tendon steroid injections, etc. Liver and other biopsies are done with either ultrasound or CT imaging guidance, based on the best modality for the patient.
Breast and musculoskeletal (MSK) sonography are also performed within the breast imaging and musculoskeletal sections.

  • Obstetrical sonography. Obstetrical sonographic evaluations are limited to the emergent needs of our Emergency Medicine department.  First trimester sonography is also available.
  • Pediatric sonography. The pediatric radiology physicians supervise and perform sonography on pediatric patients, from the newborn to the older teenager. (See Pediatric Radiology section.)

The ultrasound laboratory currently is accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and the American College of Radiology (ACR). We have a dedicated staff of nine sonographers and many board-certified physicians who have been trained in ultrasound studies. We perform sonography at Hershey Medical Center and the Cherry Drive Health Group (Out-patient site). We accommodate ultrasound imaging emergencies in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and have a sonographer in the hospital until 11 p.m. each night to facilitate excellent readily-available ultrasound imaging.
