There are over 37,000 grant making foundations in the U.S. including national foundations (e.g. Carnegie), special interest foundations (e.g. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), corporate foundations (with interests related to the parent company), family foundations (generally small but numerous), and community foundations (public charities supporting projects in designated areas). In addition, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute provides substantial funding for basic biomedical research and training. Approximately 15% of sponsored project funding at Penn State University and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center comes from not-for-profit organizations, primarily but not exclusively voluntary health agencies and other special-interest foundations. A few of Penn State Hershey Medical Center’s major not-for-profit sponsors are listed below. Many additional foundations can be accessed through the Foundation Center website.
