Simulation Instructor Course

Course Objectives

Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  • Verbalize key concepts of teaching with simulation (experiential learning);
  • Evaluate both technical and behavioral skills sessions;
  • Create a safe learning environment to engage trainees in the simulation experience;
  • Recognize when to use simulation in a curriculum;
  • Identify what not to say or do when teaching with simulation;
  • Teach and promote teamwork training using simulation;
  • Recognize the application of simulation use in health care education, research, and assessment.

 

Course Description - 5 Day Course

This course will take place in five, day-long sessions, one every three weeks from September to December, and will teach instructors to more effectively use simulation as an adjunct to traditional methodologies through sessions on debriefing techniques, educational theory, and other tools using didactic and experiential learning, hands-on practice, and reflective feedback. Each participant will have the opportunity to assume the various roles in simulation processes.

Upon completion of all five days, participants will receive a certificate verifying program completion and may claim 30 AMA PRA Category 1 CME credits for physicians or 27.7 contact hours for nurses.

 

Course Description - 4 Day Course

This course will take place on 4 adjacent days. The material covered is similar to the 5 Day Course. CME credits will be adjusted accordingly.

The Fall 2008 course schedule is available for viewing, as an example. Schedules for future courses will be made available to the participants closer to the course start date. The next course is planned for May 3-6, 2010.

 

Registration

The cost to PSU Hershey or PSU College of Medicine applicants is $450. For outside attendees, the course cost is $1850. Payment is due upon acceptance into the course, and includes course fees and materials. Lunch and two snacks are also included each day.

Class space is limited to sixteen participants to ensure adequate hands-on opportunities. Applications will be reviewed to gather a mutidisciplinary group.
