Welcome to the Penn State Hershey Simulation Center

The Penn State Hershey Simulation Center is an institutionally supported collaboration originally started by Anesthesia, Surgery, Nursing and Penn State College of Medicine. The Center is dedicated to advancing the state of the art in medical simulation. To this end, we incorporate the latest equipment and methodologies into our curricula, as well as develop, test, and validate new educational tools.

The initial collaboration between three departments has grown into a whole-hospital facility. Because of our interdisciplinary approach, we are able to take advantage of expertise in a number of areas and incorporate them into a curriculum or program as it is undergoing development. This is true not only of multiple disciplines, but also of multiple educational levels.

The center wishes to acknowledge generous support (financial support, resources, and / or equipment) from the following:

  • Lois High Berstler
  • The Eberly Family Foundation
  • The Franklin H. and Ruth L. Wells Foundation

Below are links to some of the certifications and awards that the center has received:

  • The Penn State Simulation Center has been granted full accreditation by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Comprehensive Education Institute. This 3-year accreditation from June 2007 through 2010 is the highest level possible.  Dr. Andreas Meier, then the Director of the Surgical Program, led the multi-departmental effort with institutional support from Dr. Rich Simons, Vice Dean of Education. Under the leadership of Dr. Peter Dillon, the Surgery Department demonstrated their achievements and vision in surgical simulation for Hershey Medical Center.  In addition, Dr. Elizabeth Sinz, Medical Director of the Simulation Center, and Dr. W. Bosseau Murray, Associate Director, helped to convey the integration of surgical simulation within the entire scope of simulation-based healthcare education. Many other individuals contributed to the application, typical of the unified approach to healthcare education embraced by our institution.

  • The Center has also been accredited by the American Society of Anesthesiologists as an Endorsed Simulation Program.  Dr. Elizabeth Sinz, the Center's Medical Director, led the application process with the help of John Moyer, the Administrative Director. This certification, granted from 2008 through 2010, recognizes the high quality of Anesthesia simulation programs and the dedication of resources needed to maintain and expand the programs.  The Simulation Center is also authorized by this accreditation to offer continuing medical education credits to ASA members.

  • Dr. W. Bosseau Murray was recognized as an Outstanding Mentor by the Penn State College of Medicine class of 2008.

  • Dr. Elizabeth Sinz (Medical Director, Simulation Center) is a Past President of the International Society for Simulation In HealthCare from Jan 2007 through Jan 2008.

  • First Prize for the Best Scientific Exhibit - ASA Meeting (1994)
Implementation of Cognitive Science in Anesthesiology Education and Training. Mentzer S, Murray WB, Schneider AJL, Marshall WK, Shelley KH, Taekman J, Vaduva S, Foster PA, Roeckel M.

An endowment has recently been created to further the mission of the center.  If interested in helping us educate future generations and improve patient safety, please contact the Office of University Development at the address below.

The center would like to thank the following individuals and groups for their generous gifts to our endowment:

  • The Franklin H. and Ruth L. Wells Foundation

Your generous contribution to our Simulation Endowment Fund will allow us to further enhance medical education, improve patient safety, and ensure the highest quality of patient care.  You are also helping to secure our simulation facility as an ongoing resource to the local community.  Please make your tax-deductible contribution payable to Penn State, with Simulation Endowment Fund in the memo line.  Thank you for your gift.
